Beat It With Beets!

MY first experience with beetroots wasn't too disappointing like how it was for the other kids. It did feel like I was chewing on muddy grass. The earthy scent and flavour of beets didn't go down well with me but I ate it anyway because of its gorgeous colour! Unbelievable deep red from something so ordinary on the outside. I was morbidly fascinated by beetroots from the time I saw my grandma slice through one as it left bloody burgundy stains on her fingers and the wooden chopping board.

Many years later, my mom fed me with a combination of beetroot, apple and carrot juices daily at a low point when my system was down. Initially I was a little irked by the idea of having to consume raw beet but the experience wasn't bad at all. The combination was red and delicious, and, rich and healing. Two years ago, the same combination became a big part of my dad-in-law's diet when he was recovering from stomach cancer and I'd say it helped in a speedy recovery for him as well. What an extraordinary food!

Hence a cake with beetroots in it immediately appealed to me when I came across Nigel Slater's Extremely Moist Chocolate Beet Cake recipe. Having no clue on how this cake was going to taste like with beets, dark chocolate and espresso, I decided to follow the recipe to a T. Easy ingredients and quite simple to follow really but it surely needs some planning ahead. Otherwise you could very well end up with a high pile of dishes in the sink and a very messy kitchen!

The cake came out soft, moist and beautiful as promised. The key is in not over-baking it even for the slightest minute. In the flavour department, don't worry about tasting earthy beets. The dark chocolate flavour supported by the coffee translates really well and the white topping creates a palatable balance. Make it a real thick layer (of topping) if you're not a huge fan of dark, bitter chocolate though. I feel like it's quite a sophisticated cake for the mature tastebuds so it probably won't be a big hit with kids.

Personally, I'd have preferred some nuts thrown in for some texture and nutty flavours or even experiment with some lemon or orange drizzle for a bit of zing. Otherwise the recipe is still very good on its own + it's also packed with antioxidants and other nutritions.

Happy Easter y'all!

Beetroots cooked and made into puree for the cake.

The cake demands for a lot of good quality dark chocolate.
I'd have preferred some nuts too for some texture.

Topped with cream cheese as I couldn't find any
creme fraiche at the local store.

  3. I've never heard of beetroot in dessert and I'd never heard of beetroot being so healthy and miraculous although I'm so glad it made you feel better Jaya. Oddly I have a weird relationship with beetroot, there was a phase I was eating it all the time when I was younger and then I just stopped for some reason. I think next time I see a jar I'll buy some and have it with some toast, it might be the saving of me haha although I have heard it makes you pee red which would be a weird experience, great post though, thanks for teaching me more about beetroot.

  10. I love fresh beets - one of my favorite veggies! The cake sounds good except I really don't care for coffee-flavored things (except coffee-flavored coffee, of course).

    1. Actually you can't taste the coffee in this. The espresso just enhances the flavour of dark chocolate without coming forward as coffee. That's why I like this cake.

An Award on Oscar Day

THANKS for the Kreativ Blogger award on Oscar Day,  Queen Bee . It is sweet to pin a badge like this here and since this is my first award, it's all the more sweet.  With this, I'm required to list out ten random things about myself and later tag six other favourite bloggers.  Let's start with the 10 Random Things :)  1) Diamonds are not for me.  I admire jewelry (fine or otherwise) but I'm not in love with them enough to want to own them. My favourite jewelry is a pair of white pearl stud earrings.  2) I drink water for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. It's just a good habit I can't break. I usually write with a bottle of water next to me instead of a mug of coffee.  3) I love balms . Nothing calms me better than a nice balm. It reminds me of my grandma, clears my mind, and puts me to sleep.  4) I keep a hammer in my bedroom.  It came in handy TWICE when the lock jammed. I broke it and set me free. My mother was petrified with the knowledge that m

From Doha, With Love : Minimal Changes

SO I've been to Doha a few times already by now. Minimal or no changes at all on this flat land of sand and sandstorms, except that the population seemed to have increased by god-knows-how-many-folds judging from the volume of people seen at the popular Souk Waqif in the city centre two days ago. It's like people have multiplied like the sea sands. The last few times I was there, I remember liking the place for what it was - a perfect venue to people-watch, smoke Shisha and be a tourist. Now I don't know if that's a good thing... ...if there aren't enough social venues for this astounding volume! Perhaps, I'm a little spoiled coming from a city where food is available 24 hours a day, with freedom of alcohol consumption at random bistros and cafes and to do just about everything I wished for in a cultural setting that doesn't stare at me like I'm some kind of a three-eyed monster. I suppose people here are just a curious bunch given the potpourri of

The Mean One

WHAT do I do without prompts during sluggish times like this. Thanks to Mama Kat's. I'd share something mean someone had said to me once, and why it has stuck with me after all these years.  You know how some people are plain weird ? The type that others would avoid simply because it's the easy way out around them? I've always thought that some of these individuals are just lonely and they could do with company once in a while. That's how I ended up spending some tea breaks with Madam X because most people just avoided her. So yeah. I took pity. Madam X was a smart lady with just too many personal issues that sometimes screwed up her talents. Often in a dreamy state, she loved talking about the drama that went on in her life and I'd always just listened. She also frequently went off topic and lectured about randoms things like what's inside a computer or the circuit of an electrical device. Now that's clearly not my cup of tea but I'd alway
