Made In China

SO the first doping accusation in the London Olympics has kicked off with the sensational Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen. It makes me wonder if a non-Chinese (or just a non-Asian for that matter) swimmer had created the same magic in the pool that Saturday evening, would she be subjected to such heavy criticism. Really. But I can't blame those who doubted/ doubt Ye if you had seen her create that record.

Ye Shiwen won with a time of 4:28.43

Ye not only won gold in the women's 400m individual medley but she also smashed the world record by a second, her own personal best by five seconds, and swam the final 50m faster than both the American stars Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte had managed in the men's 400m individual medley.  Now, that must be mind-boggling too - to have beaten two of world's best male swimmers in that final lap.

No wonder World Swimming Coaches Association executive director John Leonard labelled Ye's feat as 'unbelievable', you know, as in 'impossible', quite suspiciously. It's probably natural for a lot of people to suspect some kind of doping at this point + given China's track record with drugs in the swimming arena in the 1990s, it really doesn't help with the suspicion.

Then again, magic happens in every Olympic. Just look back. The International Olympic Committee says that Ye has passed the drug test after the medley. That should clear her and keep everyone happy. If Ye's been lucky, then remember, every magic comes with a price too ( to quote Rumpelstilskin from Once Upon a Time, I just love him too much). It may crop up later but for now, I think we should just appreciate this record-breaking performance in all its glory and look forward to more jaw-dropping feats by Ye.

Give her a break. She's 16. It's amazing what the human spirit is capable of at that age given the right coaching and direction +  she must have it in her too and undeniably, there is something right in the Chinese system that is able to bring out such drive and discipline in their athletes.

Besides, there is nothing that the Chinese cannot do. Look around you. I'm pretty sure half the things you own have labels that say 'Made In China'. I'm not fond of every Chinese-made thing but some things are really okay.

  1. I understand what you're saying Jaya, I don't really think that she did cheat but it wouldn't surprise me at the same time because beating her own record by five seconds is incredible and suspicious I won't lie. Congratulations to the girl though, she's became famous worldwide and I can't help but be chuffed for her!

    1. something too good is bound to raise suspicions. that's the way it is i guess. but yeah, good for her, Matthew!

    1. even some luxury Swiss watch parts are also being made in china these days. China is cheap and they can make anything.

  3. Sa's Cameron Van Der Burgh broke a record and took gold for us and I just heard that Chad le Clos took gold leaving Michael Phelps with Silver. So everyone here is quite happy - not that I care that much ;D

I'm more interested in Once upon a time - I've grown to LOVE the show. And how tragic is Rumpelstilskin's story... *sigh*

    1. when i first heard SA won a gold in swimming, i had to google it and see it for myself. of course, you should be happy :D

once upon a time is genius, isnt it. my favourite character is Rumpelstilskin of course. i think Robert Carlyle is amazing, playing the character. i also like the twist of character with Red. it's awesome that she's also the wolf! oh well, i'm still just digesting season one. need to download season 2!

    2. I'm still on season 1 too. And agreed, Red's story is genius! And I love their background stories too ;)

  4. It is an incredible feat and I think she has an amazing future ahead of her. I would be very disappointed if things didn't happen on the up an up, but she still did fantastic.

  5. Always suspicion seems to come first, if she didn't cheat good for her, if she did then she'll get it in the end, karma can be a pain.

  6. Hey, if she passes all the drug tests, that's good enough for me. I do understand the suspicion of China, though. Remember the sketchy ages of the female gymnasts in Beijing?

    1. that's always been quite controversial as well. i think they even stripped off a medal from one gymnast during one olympic because she turned out to be 14 or something. min age is supposed to be 16. hanky panky.
      sad.

  7. Heard about it in the news. Since she's clean, good for her.

  8. I reckon its all that Bak Kut Teh they eat...keeps them bodies warm, makes her swim fast. Must make Nath a believer in Ba Kut Teh Power!

    1. Bak Kuk Teh is a Malaysian thing, Danny. Also when you're seriously training to be a world champion, i'm sure they monitor your food. BKT doesnt sound like a champion's food.

that will never happen in this lifetime! hahaha. Nat's in his own food bubble.

  9. I'm a little suspicious, but also a little pissed off. Why shouldn't she be able to top the men?

  10. The Americans just hate getting beaten...especially by old communist nations... of course they must be cheating it has nothing to do with her age and physical development

    1. hahaha. age is a huge factor. look at kristy coventry. she set the world record for 200m backstroke and 2 olympics later, there are younger, stronger ones in the arena. her record still stays but her time is different now.

  12. They're so stupid la...they're just so arrogant to assume that only they can win, so the first thing they think of is that the other person has cheated!

  13. China is dominating everything and everyone else is getting butthurt over it.

No wonder why they had her tested for drugs. :P

  14. The Chinese have yet to master how to run quickly, though. I can't recall a single one of them shining on the athletics track. Maybe they need to up their ginseng dosage.

  15. Oh yes, this Olympics has been pretty awesome.. I still can't seem to get over the image of Usain Bolt tearing himself to a world record.. yup, the Chinese truly rock with their dedication, determination and drive.. they are really taking over the world (and the waters :)) by storm.

Hope all is well Jaya.. long time, no? :) Me was in a two month long workshop and took a blogging break.. nice to be back here :)

  16. This laptop im typing on was made in China. This is the first Olympics i have watched, there have been loads of stars being made thanks, in part, to the Internet.I don't like the jingoism that occurs but that tends to be certain countries, everyone else seems to enjoy it as a world event.

  17. Oh it's true, the Chinese will focus, focus, focus and that is all they will do. Trust me, I have a Chinese student and aside from working me like a dog to cook dumplings his work ethic is astonishing. Always wants to be the best.

An Award on Oscar Day

THANKS for the Kreativ Blogger award on Oscar Day,  Queen Bee . It is sweet to pin a badge like this here and since this is my first award, it's all the more sweet.  With this, I'm required to list out ten random things about myself and later tag six other favourite bloggers.  Let's start with the 10 Random Things :)  1) Diamonds are not for me.  I admire jewelry (fine or otherwise) but I'm not in love with them enough to want to own them. My favourite jewelry is a pair of white pearl stud earrings.  2) I drink water for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. It's just a good habit I can't break. I usually write with a bottle of water next to me instead of a mug of coffee.  3) I love balms . Nothing calms me better than a nice balm. It reminds me of my grandma, clears my mind, and puts me to sleep.  4) I keep a hammer in my bedroom.  It came in handy TWICE when the lock jammed. I broke it and set me free. My mother was petrified with the knowledge that m

From Doha, With Love : Minimal Changes

SO I've been to Doha a few times already by now. Minimal or no changes at all on this flat land of sand and sandstorms, except that the population seemed to have increased by god-knows-how-many-folds judging from the volume of people seen at the popular Souk Waqif in the city centre two days ago. It's like people have multiplied like the sea sands. The last few times I was there, I remember liking the place for what it was - a perfect venue to people-watch, smoke Shisha and be a tourist. Now I don't know if that's a good thing... ...if there aren't enough social venues for this astounding volume! Perhaps, I'm a little spoiled coming from a city where food is available 24 hours a day, with freedom of alcohol consumption at random bistros and cafes and to do just about everything I wished for in a cultural setting that doesn't stare at me like I'm some kind of a three-eyed monster. I suppose people here are just a curious bunch given the potpourri of

Me, Myself and I

LOVELY Miss  Azra  has tagged me. It's fun once in a while to do this sort of thing and questions here seem doable too. I'll try to keep my answers short and sweet, resisting the urge to ramble since it's all about Me, Myself and I ! 1. What is your favourite saying, or motto ?  It doesn't matter. Don't worry about it.  Basically, I just try to see the positives in most shitty situations. Realistically.   2. What is your dream job ?  It ranges from being a tour guide, a travel writer and a secret agent to a medical rep, a rose picker for Chanel gardens in France and an English teacher to those under 12. I'm allergic to teenagers. 3. What part of the world do you have little interest in travelling to ? And which part of the world is next on your list ?  I have little interest in Jakarta and Bangladesh, or any place where the temperature is -45 Deg Celcius for most of the year.  My dream destination is Africa. Next on list is either Africa or New York
