V-Night Out

"I swear to god that guy who just passed by us thinks we are having sex tonight. Did you see the way he looked at us?," said Mich to me. Incidently, I was touching her hair somewhere at this point.

Mich and I were having dinner at the Mezze Bistro yesterday during one of world's most commercially celebrated occasion when flowers are sold at ridiculously exorbitant prices and restaurant's try to squeeze in as many oysters into their Valentine's Day menu in the name of love. Lucky for us, Mich and I are not fans of oysters. The fresh ones particularly remind me of a vagina - wet, raw and slimy. I guess I'm not cut out for that as I'm really just a Jarrod and Rawlins kinda girl at heart. Mich too but that never stopped the attention we get whenever we're out together.

Mich and I at the restaurant

Driving was crazy last evening especially at hot spots like Bangsar, Damansara Heights and Medan Damansara where we were headed to. Bumper to bumper crawl all the way from my Section 16 office to the restaurant that eventually took me about 45 minutes of travel time. It's usually a seven-minute slow drive. Once there, parking was a total spy work. So we parked far up Jalan Kasah and walked along with couples who were holding hands.

"You better not fall down on those heels again. Remember the last time," Mich reminded me.

Oh yeah. It was a day before a 10km run I'd signed up last year. Mich and I were at Changkat Bukit Bintang looking for a place to eat when I told her that I had a feeling I was going to fall down and hurt my knees. She assured she'd catch me, and two minutes later I fell, and she didn't realise it until I was face down, skirt up, writhing in blinding pain. I had a slight twist in the ankle and the knee was a pipe of blood but nothing that a pint of Paulaner couldn't cure. I was happy as a clam in that environment of happy people when we were finally in a restaurant.

I must say the Valentine atmosphere yesterday was a far cry from that night's scene. It's like people were  unhappy. As Mich and I approached a certain restaurant, we saw tables taken up by couples. The ladies received a door gift of red or pink balloon hearts. The mood ? It was almost sombre. They ate, spoke a little and went on their smart phones every now and then. Hardly any conversational laughter, it was funny. They made it seem like their time together was something obligatory.

But some were clearly enjoying their moments. Like the young couple next to us at our restaurant and the elderly pair opposite them. The young ones still seemed awkwardly shy with each other but the older couple were more confident and were just having a good time together. Mich and I had a great time too. She loved her Wagyu Beef Pappardelle as much as I liked my Duck Leg Confit and we had a great wine to go with it as we chatted and laughed.

Valentine's Day or not, it's just about right to have a meaningful time together, wherever.

  1. Wow, thats alot of observations there! Yeah, V-Day now seems like obligatory and not voluntarily (no passion). I dont really celebrate V-Day with me wifey but we do it on any other days when we feel like it. Although the wifey will ask me if we could remember our V-Days, I will always try to make it up afterwards with a food adventure.

Thanks for sharing the very descriptive story! :)

  3. How wonderful that you had dinner with a girlfriend on V-Night! The other diners must have thought you were lesbians, but who cares what conventional, uncool people think. Pussy generally tastes better than oysters.

  4. oysters = vagina

I had no idea. I don't like oysters, so maybe I don't like vaginas. Although mine seems pleasant and friendly enough.

    Love,

  8. '...wet, raw and slimy' - Absolutely no comment. (I'm wrinkling my nose now.) '...but nothing that a pint of Paulaner couldn't cure'- THAT'S the spirit! 'It's like people were unhappy.' Of course they were. They'd already seen the menu. Extortionate prices everywhere!

    I like your style :)

sorry about the description, i'm also wrinkling my nose right now :p
but its just something about the way fresh oysters are and how people eat them.

i do love my German beer :)
      cheers !

  15. I am surprised that oysters do not appeal to someone who likes raw fish. They are not by convention wet and slimy unless something is off axis. Chilled, citrusy and just plasmaic heaven they are, the tashte of it, the schmell of it, the texchture...I have never consumed oysters in this country, always elsewhere so I cannot be sure of the index of your experience.
It's the same reason why I have resigned from checking out capuccino here, as it has thus far failed to measure up to the sweet conflict of hot and cold causing cream to froth, as I had on the sidewalks of Melbourne.
The comparison of oysters to the urogenital minorae and majorae are a peculiar self-advertisment and well...apples and oranges, nay?
By the way, you didn't spy any anti-Valentines vigilante teams did you? Those may have been amongst the stares you may have drawn.

    :P

    1. hahahaha. Hobbit.
i wouldnt compare raw fish to oysters. i've had plenty of them here and abroad, but it's a general perception from my part.
i don't much coffee but i must agree with on those from the sidewalks of Melbourne. if fact, i love eating out in Melbourne. excellent food, but Doha, Qatar has got some amazing restaurants too!
well. self-advertisement ? just another general observation there :)
i'm not big on V-day either but thought we'd check out the scene anyway. who wouldn't stare at us, Hobbit? arent we just cute together ???

An Award on Oscar Day

THANKS for the Kreativ Blogger award on Oscar Day,  Queen Bee . It is sweet to pin a badge like this here and since this is my first award, it's all the more sweet.  With this, I'm required to list out ten random things about myself and later tag six other favourite bloggers.  Let's start with the 10 Random Things :)  1) Diamonds are not for me.  I admire jewelry (fine or otherwise) but I'm not in love with them enough to want to own them. My favourite jewelry is a pair of white pearl stud earrings.  2) I drink water for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. It's just a good habit I can't break. I usually write with a bottle of water next to me instead of a mug of coffee.  3) I love balms . Nothing calms me better than a nice balm. It reminds me of my grandma, clears my mind, and puts me to sleep.  4) I keep a hammer in my bedroom.  It came in handy TWICE when the lock jammed. I broke it and set me free. My mother was petrified with the knowledge that m

From Doha, With Love : Minimal Changes

SO I've been to Doha a few times already by now. Minimal or no changes at all on this flat land of sand and sandstorms, except that the population seemed to have increased by god-knows-how-many-folds judging from the volume of people seen at the popular Souk Waqif in the city centre two days ago. It's like people have multiplied like the sea sands. The last few times I was there, I remember liking the place for what it was - a perfect venue to people-watch, smoke Shisha and be a tourist. Now I don't know if that's a good thing... ...if there aren't enough social venues for this astounding volume! Perhaps, I'm a little spoiled coming from a city where food is available 24 hours a day, with freedom of alcohol consumption at random bistros and cafes and to do just about everything I wished for in a cultural setting that doesn't stare at me like I'm some kind of a three-eyed monster. I suppose people here are just a curious bunch given the potpourri of

Me, Myself and I

LOVELY Miss  Azra  has tagged me. It's fun once in a while to do this sort of thing and questions here seem doable too. I'll try to keep my answers short and sweet, resisting the urge to ramble since it's all about Me, Myself and I ! 1. What is your favourite saying, or motto ?  It doesn't matter. Don't worry about it.  Basically, I just try to see the positives in most shitty situations. Realistically.   2. What is your dream job ?  It ranges from being a tour guide, a travel writer and a secret agent to a medical rep, a rose picker for Chanel gardens in France and an English teacher to those under 12. I'm allergic to teenagers. 3. What part of the world do you have little interest in travelling to ? And which part of the world is next on your list ?  I have little interest in Jakarta and Bangladesh, or any place where the temperature is -45 Deg Celcius for most of the year.  My dream destination is Africa. Next on list is either Africa or New York
